It’s summertime, and that means it’s time for boating on Lake Lanier and other area lakes. That also means that it’s high season for BUI arrests. What’s a BUI? Basically, Georgia law regarding boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs mirrors the law on driving a vehicle while intoxicated. This is no longer a minor offense – you will be arrested and charges will be filed against you. If a child is on the boat the time of the arrest, you can be charged under child endangerment provisions of the law. If you have any marijuana or drugs on the boat at the time of the arrest, you will also be charged for possession and possibly other related offenses. Don’t let your friend who’s been drinking drive your boat – you can be charged for that, too. The provisions for those under 21 are even more severe. If you are under 21 years old, don’t even think about having a drink and driving a boat.
